In the good ol’ days the price of a little shameless self-promotion was simply your own humility, but all that’s changed with Facebook’s latest announcement. This past Wednesday Facebook rolled out its latest feature – personalized promoted status updates. Anyone manning a brand page should be familiar with the practice.
After writing a status update for your brand page you’re given the option of paying extra to have it promoted to users your brand might be looking to reach, for a little bit of cash your status is featured prominently at the top of users’ newsfeeds
Previously unavailable to individual users, the company has been testing the new feature in New Zealand and 20 other countries before revealing it to U.S. users on Wednesday.
For the most part, the latest update has users split down the middle. Some see the new tool as an effective resource for boosting visibility for events like concerts, garage sales, etc., while others see it as another money grab by the social network.
Will the personal promoted posts eventually become universally received like the Timeline design or will they fall to the wayside? Only time will tell.
