Steve Jobs: 1955 – 2011
Go anywhere on the Web today and you’re sure to find a post about the recent passing of Apple founder, Steve Jobs. While Jobs was the preeminent trailblazer in the tech world, his ideas of branding and marketing helped make Apple into the iconic brand that it is today. The slick Apple brand extends from design to packaging to store fronts all over the world, largely thanks for the son of Paul and Clara jobs.
We thought we’d pay our respects to the former Apple CEO by showcasing a few of our favorite Apple ads through the years, starting off with the iconic 1984 ad. Directed by Ridley Scott and budgeted at just under a cool $900,000, Apple’s 1984 ad set the gold standard for epic commercials, if you could even call it that.
Our talented web czar and avid Steve Jobs fan, Hosea, has pointed out a few fun facts about Mr. Jobs that you may not know: For instance, Jobs didn’t care for consultants and market research, he believed that consumers didn’t know what they wanted until they saw it. As opposed to shifting design to meet consumer demand, the San Francisco native averted his attention to developing an innovative product that he himself would want.
Jobs’s sphere of influence went far beyond the Apple brand. In 1986, he purchased a 3D software manufacturing company called Graphic Group from George Lucas for $5 million. After seeing the business’s struggles, Jobs shifted the company’s focus more towards entertainment. That company went on to become Pixar. In 2006, Jobs sold Pixar to Disney in a deal worth more than $7.4 billion, making him Disney’s largest single shareholder.
From the iPod’s black sillouette ads to Justin Long and the Get a Mac campaign, Apple’s ads have inspired not only consumers, but advertising and marketing professionals as well. The correlation between Microsoft’s I’m a PC commercials and the Get a Mac ads is as clear as day.
